In a dedicated effort to promote financial literacy and equip young minds with essential life skills, White Rose Credit Union recently conducted a dynamic financial literacy class at Northeastern Middle School in York, PA.
The credit union’s financial literacy program, Mad City Money, transformed the 7th and 8th-grade classrooms into a simulation where students delved into real-world financial scenarios. Through Mad City Money, students were assigned hypothetical careers, complete with corresponding salaries and families. The immersive simulation challenged them to navigate the intricacies of budgeting, handling unexpected bills, receiving unexpected income, and making significant financial decisions.
Some students were presented with additional challenges in the form of hypothetical credit card and/or student loan debt. These elements added a layer of realism to the simulation, mirroring the financial complexities that individuals often face in the real world.
The ultimate objective for the students was to successfully complete the simulation with $100 remaining in their checking accounts, emphasizing the importance of budgeting and making informed financial choices.
White Rose Credit Union is committed to supporting educational initiatives that contribute to the well-being and success of the community. The Mad City Money program is part of the credit union’s broader efforts to promote financial education and empower individuals of all ages with the tools they need for financial success.
