First Capital FCU Awards Four $1,000 Scholarships to Members

First Capital Federal Credit Union is proud to announce Sawyer Zimmer, Shelby Vernon, Evan Everhart, and Peyton Ruhland are the winners of the 2024 Dennis Flickinger Honorable Scholarships.
“We are so excited to award this scholarship money to four very deserving students,” said Sue DeStephano, President/CEO. “We wish them success in college and in life. We know they will go far.”
Sawyer Zimmer is a senior at Central York High School where he is on distinguished honor roll, and a member of the National & German Honors Societies. Sawyer is also the Percussion Captain in Marching Band, the Captain of the Varsity Track & Field team, as well as a member of jazz band, pit orchestra and the Future Business Leaders of America. Sawyer is an Eagle Scout and volunteers at Saint Joseph Catholic Church as an altar server, at the Saint Joseph Carnival, and the Catholic Harvest food pantry. Sawyer plans to attend West Chester University in the fall, to pursue a degree in Biostatistics.
Shelby Vernon is a senior at Dallastown High School where she is a member of the National French Honor Society. Shelby is ranked in the top 10% of her graduating class and on distinguished honor roll. She is also a member of the Future Business Leaders of America, French Club, Mental Health Awareness Club, and is the Captain of the Varsity Soccer team. Shelby plans to attend Susquehanna University in the fall, to pursue a degree in Environmental Science.
Evan Everhart is a senior at Central York High School where he is on the Distinguished Honor Roll. He plans to pursue a degree in business at East Tennessee State University. Evan is an avid water polo player and enjoys teaching younger kids the game. He participates in the Young Life Youth Group and has served meals through the elementary school summer program.
Peyton Ruhland is a senior at Spring Grove Area High School. She will be attending Penn State University to pursue a degree in education. She has been on the distinguished honor roll all 4 years and was bronze medalist in the national Spanish exam in 2022 and 2023. Peyton participates in Link Crew, Unified Track Team, and the Future Educators Club, where she served as President for two years. She is also a member of the National Honor Society.
The First Capital scholarship program was renamed the Dennis Flickinger Honorable Scholarship Program in 2016 to honor our former CEO, Dennis Flickinger, who retired in 2015. Dennis advocated for financial education in schools and worked tirelessly to promote Credit Unions as a better choice for their financial future.
