Credit Unions Fight to Protect Tax-Exempt Status
As discussions around federal tax policy continue to heat up, more than 18,000 emails have been sent to New Jersey and Pennsylvania Congressional offices through the CrossState Grassroots Action Center in support of Don’t Tax My Credit Union!
Data reaffirms what credit unions and their advocates have long known—there is strong and widespread support for preserving the tax-exempt status of credit unions. A national survey conducted in December 2024 revealed:
- 69% of voters want Congress to oppose tax increases, reinforcing that now is not the time to raise costs on credit union members.
- Voters favor keeping credit unions tax-exempt by an 18-point margin, with 63% of credit union members supporting exemption.
- 70% of voters agreed that taxing credit unions would amount to a direct tax on millions of Americans while doing little to impact the federal budget deficit.
- Messaging emphasizing that Wall Street banks are pushing for these tax changes resonated with 70% of voters.
CrossState is working diligently to protect the tax-exempt status of credit unions in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Our government relations team continues to engage lawmakers to ensure they understand the vital role credit unions play in financial inclusion and the economic growth of your communities.
