The Elma Saloum Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Carter Kijowski of Ford Cliff, and Magen Walzak of Sligo, on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at the 66th Annual Meeting of Armstrong Associates Federal Credit Union (AAFCU).  This scholarship was established in memory of Elma Saloum, who was a dedicated supporter of our credit union from our inception in 1958 until her passing in 2022.  Criteria for the scholarship includes AAFCU membership, scholastic achievement, leadership and active community service, which are all attributes encouraged by Elma, and areas where she personally excelled.

Carter is a sophomore at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA in the School of Pharmacy.  A Dean’s List student every semester in a very rigorous curriculum, Carter also volunteers in the University community, welcoming and mentoring students into the Pharmacy program.  He also serves as a volunteer coach for Armstrong High School Volleyball, coaching skills of the game, as well as encouraging high achievement and good decision making in athletics and academics, and serving as a positive role model.

Magen is a senior at Union High School, with a resume including high scholastic achievements, a wide range of leadership positions, varsity volleyball and softball, as well as various volunteer projects serving both school organizations and her community.  She has earned the Girl Scout Bronze, Silver, and (pending) Gold Awards for her community projects, and is also active in her church.  Magen has performed at district and regional levels, honors band and choirs, and in school musicals, showcasing and sharing her musical talents.  She will be attending Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, OH this fall, to pursue Music Education with Voice Primary.

The Elma Saloum Memorial Scholarship is an annual award, given up to four years, provided the student continues to meet the criteria.  The next recipient(s) will be awarded in May 2025, and is open to graduating high school seniors, as well as those continuing in higher education and non-traditional students.  Applications and criteria are available in January by contacting Armstrong Associates FCU at dwalker@myaafcu.com or 724-763-1172.
